Yonca Gulgec
Graduated from De Monfort University of Leicester/UK, Yonca Gülgec, ended her 22 year career in Textile Engineering in 2000 with a seemingly spontaneous decision which surprised her colleagues. Her relatives and friends, however, found this decision more understandable as this young woman did ballet when she was a child. During her school and college period she played volleyball at a professional level and dance and music were important aspects of her life. In fact, the sequence of events that led Yonca Gülgeç to abandon her career and start dancing professionally had begun long before 2000. In 1998, she had met Adriana Santana, whom she later called “the woman/dancer-singer who changed the way of my life”. After starting to take Salsa lessons from Group Palanke’s dancer and vocalist Santana, she was on a one way road; the “Latin Fire” was burning in her, and she would light the touch paper to whoever came close enough! For some time, she lived a dual life, combining her textile engineering career during the day with teaching Salsa at night. Even when Salsa was just a hobby for her, she created the foundation for her future venture into the world of Salsa. She invited famous instructors from London, and organized Salsa workshops. After taking lessons from world famous dancers-instructors,she started to work as an instructor. In 2002, she also started to attend and participate in Salsa congresses abroad, 2-3 times a year to update her knowledge. With her outgoing personality and considerable creativity she quickly picked up on the latest trends in Salsa. Thus, Mundo Latino has introduced and established itself as a leader of “Social Latin Dance” in Turkey and in so doing is inspiring the next generation of Turkish Latin dancers.
